Lots of sustainability research can be connected by a single theme: unintended consequences.
Engineering, both at small and large scales, has yet to develop ways of controlling for
the unforseen risks of implementing new technology. Even more concerning is the fact that the
consequences of these risks seem to be scaling with technological innovation. In this talk,
I explore this potentially existential problem, and suggest heuristics that can help mitigate the
error in 'trial and error'.
